Parent Engagement

Parent Engagement

Two students standing with their parents

Parents are an important and vital part of the education process. Parents and family continue to be the biggest influence on student decisions with respect to a student’s education. For this reason, Making Waves Academy tries to foster a variety of pathways to engage parents. Building rapport with our parents and encouraging two-way communication is one of the better ways student needs can be addressed in a timely and effective way.

  • Events. Throughout the year, MWA creates a variety of opportunities for families to visit the campus and/or connect with leaders. Some examples include Back to School Night, a club and department exhibition, and Parent Talks.
  • Family Education. Families are surveyed on issues about which they would like more information. Sessions are developed and led by on-site staff or external service providers.
  • Advisor and Family Conferences. Student led parent teacher conferences take place at least once during the school year. In addition to those conferences, families are encouraged to call, email, or set up meetings with teachers any time throughout the semester year they would like. Our hope is to foster open communication between home and school.
  • College Success Program. Making Waves Education Foundation provides personalized support and scholarship opportunities to Wave-Makers interested in attending college after high school. If accepted to the program, Wave-Makers are partnered with a college coach and financial services coordinator throughout their college career. These highly skilled professionals support students to successfully earn a bachelor’s or associate degree, transfer to a four-year college, or complete a community college vocational program. Wave-Makers in the program receive a college scholarship to make college affordable and help them to graduate with minimal to no debt. And as part of the Wave-Maker network, students join a community of their peers and have access to career counseling and graduate school advising.
  • The Parent Leadership Team (PLT) is a parent-led group of dedicated Making Waves Academy parents and guardians connected to the Contra Costa County Charter Coalition (5C) who represent and advocate for the needs of our school community. Learn more.
  • Parent Voice. Families can play a direct role in our school’s success by joining our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) or the LCAP Advisory Group. These committees provide a formal platform for parents to share feedback, influence budget priorities, and help shape the programs that support our students’ growth. We invite you to take an official seat at the table and partner with us to ensure every child has the resources they need to thrive.
